![]() I am very interested in this author's arc. From the symbolic apple of the Garden of Eden (or was it a pomegranate?) to the Apollonian/Dionysian struggle and symbology, to the brandishment of "witches" with their healing, pagan herbs, to the present century of drug wars, Pollan ties the history of plants and social taboo all together in a single timeline, brimming both with historical (and contemporary) facts and an eye for the bigger picture. But I was pleased to get on the speculation train (he pilots so well) about the fundamental connection between plants and social taboo. I was pretty much "up" on the legalization debate and its deep implications for libertarian politics. Of the four chapters (sweetness:apple, beauty:tulip, intoxication:marijuana, control:potato), I most enjoyed reading, and learned the most from, the marijuana chapter. ![]() Four down, three to go! Michael Pollan is officially one of my favorite authors. ![]()
